（１３）ジャムセッション（２）

この日の、また別のジャムセッションのセットは、ヒューストン・パーソン（ts）、地元オレゴン・ポートランドのトロンボーン奏者のスタン・ボック、ミミ・フォックス（g）、オベッド・カリベラ（ds）私というメンバー。

私はヒューストン以外は、この日演奏するのが初めてで、曲も何をするのかわからなかった。

ヒューストンが、１曲終わるごとに、「次はブラックバード！」とか叫んで、それでGO!

Jazz Party on the Oregon Coast
For Jazz at Newport, Small Is Beautiful

The chief pleasure of a jazz party is hearing unscripted sets that bring together musicians who don’t regularly work as a unit. Take Friday’s nightcap session at this year’s 5th annual Jazz at Newport, September 4-7. Scheduled to play from 10:30 p.m. to midnight are Houston Person, Terell Stafford, Seattle pianist Marc Seales, and Portland-based bassist Dave Captein and drummer Gary Hobbs. Or take a “sampler set” scheduled for Saturday afternoon, where Kevin Mahogany will join guitarist Mimi Fox, Atsuko Hashimoto on Hammond B-3, and Obed Calvaire on drums.

You get the idea. Such combinations often bring out facets of a musician you don’t hear in their regular groups, and create a sense of adventure and possibility that audiences can share — when artists are willing. And these artists are, or they wouldn’t be there, as festival organizers proclaim on their website: “We seek the highest level of commitment to a jazz party concept where all artists are willing to perform with all other artists in different and unique combinations.”

That’s the formula for a jazz party.

今回の仕事の依頼がきた時、もちろんヒューストンとジェフとのH3での出演と、それと別に、いくつかのジャムセッションのような、セットもお願いできますか？というお願いがあり、こちらもおもしろそうなので、OKした。

このジャズフェス会場で、何人かのお客さんから、ラジオで聞いて来たのよ、と言われたが、ヴォーカルのケビン・マホガニーが、ジャズフェスの前に、ラジオ番組に出演して、今回のこのジャズフェスのみどころのひとつとして、

〜〜ジャズミュージシャン達が、ふだん活動している、レギュラーバンドではない、全くの初対面で、演奏する時の　スリルとアベンチャー、そして、いつものレギュラーバンドでは、聞けない、また違った面の発見とか、そういったジャズならではの、個々の個性を出し合って、その場で、瞬時に作り上げていく、クリエイティブな芸術の創造の瞬間の現場を、ミュージシャン達と共にシェアしましょう〜〜

というようなメッセージを話していたらしく、この日のセットの、ケビン・マホガニー（vo)、ミミ・フォックス（g）、オベッド・カリベラ（ds）、私（org）による、演奏の１曲目が終わったときに、ケビンが、「なんてスイングするんだろう！どうです、皆さん！まるで、このメンバーでツアーをしているようじゃないですか！！」と聴衆に呼びかけていた。
